Disease and Your Eyes

"The human body is an intricate and beautiful creation with systems that communicate with each other from head to toe.  The eye is not excluded from this.  In other words, each person that comes into the office is not 'just a pair of eyes,' but a human being with other body parts and systems and a pair of eyes which sit as the driver."            - Dr. Obie

Medical Eye Care...

Sometime an exam may not be as "routine" as we would like. At times problems arise which may or may not have been expected. These problems do not alarm us. Dr. Obie is highly trained to manage the gravest of eye illnesses. In addition, we are trusted by several ophthalmologists, and physicians in other fields of medicine.  This is important to know because the body is a complex system of highly designed parts which interact in miraculously intricate ways.  Therefore often times, signs and ailments found in the eye can not only save sight, but can aid in solving systemic "mystery diagnoses," and even be life changing or life saving.

It is important for your eye doctor or any of your doctors to be fully aware of the impact of what is being diagnosed in the life of his/her patient.  As was stated before, every exam is comprehensive.  You should also know that:

·  We use state of the art diagnostic

    equipment for diagnosis, treatment

    and management of most eye

    diseases.

    transmitted electronically!

·  WE DON'T EVEN HAVE THE "PUFF OF

    AIR TEST!!!"

Diagnosis, Treatment, Management, Comanangement

Hands On EyeCare is practical about eye health. A Hands On eye examination and consultation strives to not only ensure the best possible vision, but also to assist in the detection of underlying ocular and systemic health problems that may manifest in the eye.

Diseases such as:

   Glaucoma

   • Diabetic Retinopathy

   Cataract

   Macular Degeneration

   Neurological Disorders

   Circulatory Conditions

   Tumors

   More

All of these conditions can lead to severe irreversible vision loss, blindness, and severe systemic consequences.

Most of these disorders can be managed successfully if detected early.

All of this information underscores the importance of comprehensive primary eyecare for your vision, eye health, and overall health.

It may be hard to comprehend that such a simple test with no pain involved can be so necessary in maintaining your overall health. Well this is a fact that should not be ignored.

Your eyes can reveal alot about you and your health. They are responsible for so much from how you work, to they way you look, even how you play.

Vision is much more than 20/20. Just because you see well straight ahead (A), you must also consider everywhere else (B).

In addition, 20/20 does not necessarily mean healthy eyes. There is much more that needs to be evaluated than the way you see and feel.

If you or someone you know is having problems with their eyes, feel free to contact us for an appointment.

Did you know that...

   • Your eye is not supposed to itch, water,

burn, or be red or pink all of the time.

If this is the case with you, you should have your eyes checked. It could be as simple as an allery or as serious as out of control glaucoma.

   • Any form of flashes of light and some

types of floating spots is not normal.

This could be a sign of a very serious problem which could lead to immediate vision loss.

   • Blurry vision cannot always be

     corrected by glasses

     or conventional contact lenses.

When this occurs, it could be the result of an abnormal cornea, cataract, eye inflammation, or even a serious neurological problem.

   • Subtle changes to the eye can be

     detrimental, even irreparable if not

     detected early.

Sometimes the best medicine is prevention and each eye examination should be performed with the knowledge that each exam has future implications.

A routine exam can quickly become an emergency - we understand this at Hands On EyeCare.

   • Sometimes your other physicians

could be very interested in your eye

     exam.

Many times a thorough eye exam can aid in the detection of common and rare, chronic and acute diseases of the body. In addition, certain medications can have mild to serious side effects on the eyes.

The doctors at Hands On EyeCare have gone through rigorous training to develop a keen eye in detecting many conditions which affect both the eye and the body.

   • It is important to have a good

backup plan. We are trusted by

     several different ophthalmologists

     and other healthcare specialists.

We are more than capable of

     making the most appropriate

     decisions for the gravest of

     conditions.

Surgical Co-Management

Sometimes problems cannot be fixed using conventional methods such as glasses or contact lenses. There are a host of  situations for which surgery is necessary. However, there are those situations when surgery is elective. Regardless of the circumstances, these are times for tough decisions to be made.

Your eyes are very precious and need to be trusted to professionals who are competent in what they do.  The questions people generally have when specialty care or surgery is discussed are,

          "Who should I go to?"

"What are they going to do?"

          "What are my options?"

"What is the best for me?"

These are excellent questions and you need someone who can give you a straight unbiased answer for making decisions that will affect the rest of your life. That is why surgical comanagement is a crucial aspect of good primary eye care. Without it, people can make grave decisions which can lead to severe consequences.

Dr. Obie is the primary point of contact to assist you in the decision making. In order to do so, he has to stay up to date on the latest procedures. The doctors at Hands On EyeCare are familiar with many ophthalmological surgeons in and around Houston and cooperate with some of the best physicians in town.

What co-management may intail could range from a referral (passive co-management) to the proper physician for you to management of the pre- and post-surgical aspect of your procedure (active co-management).  The procedures for which we actively manage are listed:

      1.  Cataract (Medically necessary and elective)

      2.  Refractive Surgery including Lasik, PRK, ICL (surgery for Lasik non-candidates), etc...

      3.  Various Medically Necessary Procedures including Retinal Surgeries, Diabetic Eye Procedures,

           and more...

      4.  Corneal Transplants

      5.  Pterygium

      6.  Blepharoplasty (Lid Lift)

      7.  Various Cosmetic Procedures including BoTox

You should know care after surgery is extremely important. Therefore careful management is paramount to prevent complications. This is why we have been following our patients in concert with the doctors to whom we have referred our patients.

If you are considering a surgical opinion and you would like an opinion on what is best for you, feel free to contact us.

Surgical co-management is offered for various surgeries including cataract and refractive surgery (like Lasik). Often times, such a service may prove to be useful before having the surgery because treatment options can be weighed and discussed honestly about your candidacy. If you proceed with the surgery we will then link you with the best doctors for your condition.
